Creating and managing audiences

For every (type of) message you want to send via Campaigns, you need an audience. An audience is defined by selecting a consent type and a combination of contact segments.

Creating an audience

  1. Open the Campaigns menu in your CMS, and go to the submenu 'Audiences'.

  2. Click the blue '+New' button in the top right of the page.

  3. Determine the name of your intended audience, and the consent type you want to use as a basis for messages to these contacts.

  4. By default, the email address listed in your site settings will be the sender address for Campaigns messages. If you want to set up a different sender address for this audience, check 'Different email settings for this audience' and enter the desired email address and sender name. The same applies to the reply-to email, if you want to enable receiving responses.

Booking Experts’ customer support can help you set up this default sender address as well as any default reply-to name and email address.

  5. Click 'Save' to create your base audience. The next step is to refine it. However, for very broad messaging, you can choose not to.

Refining the audience

After saving your new audience, you can see how many contacts are available for it based only on consent type. Not all of them will be part of the target group you intend to create with this audience. Refine the audience by including or excluding your previously defined segments.

  1. Click 'Add segment'. Select 'Include segment'. In the side window that opens, select a segment that aligns with your intended audience.

  2. You can repeat this as many times as you need, until you feel that all relevant segments have been included. The totals of contacts with deliverable status in these segments will be shown, with a preview to the right.

  3. Click 'Add segment'. Select 'Exclude segment'. In the side window that opens, select a segment that does not align with your intended audience.

  4. Any contacts in excluded segments will be removed from your audience, even if they were initially included based on other segments. This ensures that your audience is as effective as possible, and reduces the chances that your message will be marked as spam or causes contacts to unsubscribe entirely.

By editing an existing audience you can redefine which segments are included or excluded.

Editing audiences

Audiences are intended to be re-used for other messages, for example as part of a multi-message email campaign or for a message that you want to send again next year. So, be sure to accurately name them and update their refinement if needed.

  1. Open the Campaigns menu in your CMS, and go to the submenu 'Audiences'.

  2. Use the available filters if needed.

  3. Click the name of an audience to open it.

  4. The refinement of an audience can be directly edited.

  5. Click the blue 'Settings' button to also edit the audience name, consent basis, or email settings.

Changing the consent basis of an audience should only be done if you plan to entirely rename and repurpose that audience.
